Austria’s healthcare system is based on compulsory social health insurance covering almost all residents, with care delivered by a mix of public hospitals, contracted private providers, and self-employed practitioners. Patients generally have free choice of doctors and hospitals. Co-payments exist for pharmaceuticals and inpatient care, while outpatient GP and specialist services are free. Electronic health records (ELGA) and e-prescription are increasingly standard, supporting interoperability and data access. The public and private sectors work in parallel, offering flexibility to patients.

Doctors are licensed through regional Medical Chambers and must participate in regular continuing education. Practices must comply with the Austrian Health Telematics Act, the GDPR, and social insurance billing and documentation standards. E-prescribing is nationally supported. Facilities are subject to licensing and random inspection. Medical liability insurance is mandatory for practitioners, and accreditation standards are enforced by health authorities.
