Securely Connect ChatGPT and Claude to Your EHR with CloudMedico

CloudMedico now lets medical practices connect supported ChatGPT and Claude experiences to the information and everyday workflows they already manage in their EHR. Doctors and practice staff can ask natural-language questions, prepare for visits, review recorded information, and carry out permitted tasks while CloudMedico keeps the practice in control of access and changes.

What’s new

A connected AI assistant can work with information already recorded in CloudMedico, so you do not need to copy parts of a patient record into a separate conversation. The assistant can access only the information the connected CloudMedico user is already allowed to see and can perform only the actions the clinic has enabled.

This gives doctors and practice staff another practical way to work with CloudMedico: ask a clear question or give a clear instruction, then review the result in the context of the clinic’s normal workflow.

Why this matters for a medical practice

Clinical and administrative work often involves moving between appointments, patient records, prescriptions, exams, follow-up information, and practice activity. An AI assistant can make those everyday tasks easier to navigate by bringing together the permitted information needed for a specific question or action.

Instead of manually opening several parts of the EHR or copying information into a separate chat, the doctor can ask for a concise view of what is already recorded in CloudMedico. This can help with preparing for visits, checking recent history, reviewing follow-up work, and handling routine scheduling tasks more naturally.

The goal is not to turn the AI assistant into a doctor. CloudMedico remains the clinical record and the authorization boundary, while the connected assistant provides another way to work with permitted information and supported actions.

What doctors can do

The connection is designed around everyday practice work rather than technical commands. Depending on the clinic’s settings and the user’s permissions, you could ask:

  • “Show me today’s appointments.”
  • “Prepare a concise briefing for this patient.”
  • “Show this patient’s recent recorded visits.”
  • “Show their recorded prescription history and allergies.”
  • “Show their recent exams.”
  • “What follow-up work is recorded as due?”
  • “Create a follow-up appointment for next Tuesday.”
  • “Move this appointment to Friday at 11:00.”
  • “Prepare this visit update and show me the details before saving it.”
  • “Prepare this prescription change and ask me to confirm before saving it.”

You can also review recorded conditions, procedures, discharges, document information, and permitted practice activity. When the clinic enables changes, the assistant can create or update appointments and can create or update visits, prescriptions, and exams after you review and confirm the proposed details. It does not make diagnoses or replace clinical judgement.

A typical workflow

A doctor could begin the day by asking, “What’s my schedule today?” and then request a briefing for a selected patient using their CloudMedico reference. The assistant can review the patient’s permitted recorded history, such as recent visits, prescriptions, exams, allergies, conditions, and follow-up information.

If the doctor then needs to move an appointment, the assistant can carry out the scheduling change when the clinic has enabled that capability and the connected user has permission to do so. For a clinical change, such as recording a visit, prescription, or exam, the assistant first presents the proposed details and waits for explicit confirmation before saving them.

This creates a simple pattern: ask, review, and confirm when confirmation is required. CloudMedico continues to enforce the same underlying access rules throughout the workflow.

Why this is different from copying patient data into a chat

Copying information from an EHR into a separate chat can remove important context and bypass the normal access rules of the clinical system. With the CloudMedico connection, the EHR remains the source of truth and the assistant works through controlled access to the information and actions that have been enabled.

The user does not need to paste sections of the chart manually. CloudMedico checks the live connection, clinic configuration, user permissions, and access to the relevant records before returning information or allowing a supported action.

You stay in control

  • Your usual CloudMedico permissions still apply. A connected assistant cannot see information that the connected user is not allowed to see.
  • The clinic chooses what is available. Capabilities can be enabled or disabled to match the practice’s needs.
  • Sensitive changes require your review. Where confirmation is required, the assistant shows the proposed change and waits for an explicit answer before saving it.
  • You can stop access. Connections can be revoked whenever the clinic or connected user decides.

The connection does not send patient messages, submit prescriptions externally, synchronize calendars, create invoices, or delete CloudMedico records.

What happens before a clinical change is saved

Routine appointment creation and rescheduling can happen directly when the doctor or practice user has already given a clear instruction and has the required permission. More sensitive changes are handled differently.

For visits, prescriptions, exams, appointment cancellations, and other actions that require confirmation, the assistant prepares the exact proposed change first. The doctor reviews the relevant details, the assistant asks for explicit confirmation, and only then can the supported change be saved in CloudMedico.

This keeps the workflow convenient without treating every action as equally risky. Clinical decisions remain with the doctor, and CloudMedico does not allow the AI assistant to silently widen its own access.

What the assistant can and cannot access

A connected assistant does not receive unrestricted access to the practice. What it can see or change depends on the clinic’s settings, the capabilities enabled for the connection, the connected user’s current CloudMedico permissions, and whether that user is allowed to access the relevant patient, clinician, or record.

If a user cannot view or change something in CloudMedico under the applicable permissions, connecting an AI assistant does not give them a way around that restriction. The clinic can also disable capabilities or revoke a connection when needed.

Protecting patient identity

For patient-specific questions, CloudMedico uses a patient reference from the patient’s record instead of offering patient-name search through the assistant. This reduces unnecessary identity exposure while keeping the doctor able to select the correct patient inside CloudMedico.

The reference does not make health information anonymous. Clinics should still assess the external AI provider, its terms, and its privacy settings before connecting it to patient information.

Works with ChatGPT and Claude

CloudMedico supports Claude and ChatGPT in the desktop app, including its ChatGPT and Codex experiences through the configured connection. Classic ChatGPT web is not currently supported. Availability may also depend on the AI provider’s account or workspace settings.

The connection uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open standard that allows supported AI assistants to access permitted CloudMedico capabilities in a structured way. Doctors do not need to understand MCP to use the integration; they can work with the assistant using normal language.

A foundation for an AI-first EHR

Connecting ChatGPT and Claude is one part of CloudMedico’s broader AI direction. The same secure access model can support more useful workflows over time, while keeping the EHR as the source of truth and keeping doctors in control of clinical decisions.

The aim is simple: use AI to reduce repetitive navigation, make recorded information easier to work with, and help practices complete everyday tasks more efficiently without replacing clinical judgement.
