What M81.0 covers

M81.0 is for age-related osteoporosis when the patient has no current fracture caused by it. It includes postmenopausal, senile and involutional osteoporosis, and osteoporosis NOS.

Primary care, endocrinology, rheumatology and OB-GYN use it. Localized osteoporosis is M81.6 and other osteoporosis is M81.8. Once the patient has a current pathological fracture from osteoporosis, the code moves to category M80.

Billing and coding notes

The guidelines say osteoporosis is a systemic condition, so the site is not part of M81 codes. For a patient with known osteoporosis, a fracture from a minor fall that would not break a healthy bone is coded in M80, not as a traumatic fracture.

M81 asks for additional codes, if applicable, for a major osseous defect (M89.7-) and a personal history of a healed osteoporosis fracture (Z87.310). The excludes1 list rules out M80.- and Sudeck's atrophy (M89.0) with this code.
