What ICD-10-CM says

Notes at M17.1, Unilateral primary osteoarthritis of knee (they apply to every code under it)

Includes

  • Primary osteoarthritis of knee NOS

What M17.11 covers

M17.11 is for primary osteoarthritis in the right knee only. Primary means no other cause, such as an old injury, is documented.

Orthopedics, rheumatology, primary care and physical therapy use it. The left knee is M17.12 and an unspecified side is M17.10. Primary osteoarthritis in both knees is M17.0. Post-traumatic and other secondary osteoarthritis of the knee have their own codes (M17.2-M17.5).

Billing and coding notes

If both knees have primary osteoarthritis, use M17.0 rather than M17.11 and M17.12 together. M17.11 is for the right knee alone.

Knee pain is part of the osteoarthritis and is not added as M25.561. After a total knee replacement, the right knee is no longer coded as osteoarthritis; a status code for the presence of the artificial knee joint (Z96.651) applies.
