What F32.A covers
F32.A is for depression when the record does not say it is major depressive disorder or give any other detail. It includes depression NOS and depressive disorder NOS. It was added in FY2022 so that "depression" alone no longer codes to major depressive disorder.
Primary care uses it most, often at a first visit or a screening follow-up. F32.9 is major depressive disorder, single episode, unspecified, for when the clinician documents major depression. Mood disorder NOS is F39.
Billing and coding notes
The F32 category has an excludes1 for bipolar disorder (F31.-), manic episode (F30.-) and recurrent depressive disorder (F33.-), so F32.A is never reported with those. Adjustment disorder (F43.2-) is an excludes2 and can be coded with it when both are documented.
Code F32.A only when the note says depression and nothing more. If the clinician writes major depressive disorder, use an F32 or F33 MDD code. If the depression is a reaction to a stressor, an F43.2- code is usually the accurate one.

Questions about F32.A
What is the difference between F32.A and F32.9?
F32.A is depression with no further detail. F32.9 is major depressive disorder, single episode, unspecified. Use F32.9 only when the clinician documents major depression.
Is F32.A billable?
Yes. F32.A is a complete code. It is unspecified, so a more specific code is better once the clinician documents the type of depression.

In CloudMedico, a visit's diagnoses come from the current ICD-10-CM list. For US practices, the visit flags a code that isn't billable on its date, and a superbill made from an invoice carries the visit's diagnoses.
